Acrylic plastic windows are known as Plexiglas windows, and are the same thickness as traditional glass while being 10 times stronger. Polycarbonate windows are more expensive, but are very secure – they’re 250 times more impact resistant than safety glass and more than 10 times stronger the acrylic windows.

"Glass doors do shatter," said Kohler spokeswoman Kristine Cristina. "We really can't give you an answer to how often because many people don't call to tell us." She said she believed the incidence was very low, however -- in the past two years, she said she knew of fewer than 10 incidents like mine. "It is very few and far between," Cristina said.

A small rock thrown from under a lawnmower, a tree branch torn off in a storm, or a baseball hit from the neighbor kids playing all can seem to hone in directly on a home window. Glass shatters easily, which also makes it a favorite way for burglars to access a home. Replacing standard glass with other options that do not shatter as readily can give you more peace of mind about the safety of your home.
What would make shower doors suddenly explode? It turns out that their greatest strength – safety -- is also their greatest weakness. When glass is heated in the tempering process, its tensile strength is altered. While it becomes much stronger and resistant to direct impact, it becomes much more susceptible to a side impact. As a result, tempered glass dropped on its edge will readily shatter.

Protective glass made from actual glass has a clear plastic film sandwiched between two glass sheets. The film is tough, tear resistant, and stretches like rubber when stressed. A blow to it causes the glass on either side to shatter, but the film stays whole. This prevents rain or other water from entering during a storm. The technique goes back to the 1930s when celluloid was used in the sandwich. This type of glass meets the required building codes in hurricane zones. and is recommended by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for public buildings in earthquake zones.

My still-swollen right foot doesn't necessarily agree, but in truth, my injuries are remarkably negligible given the amount of glass that showered over me, and I am lucky that the tempering worked as well as it did. I shudder to think about the injuries I might have sustained were this normal glass.

One of the most important aspects to home security – and one that is often overlooked in favor of more expensive and higher-tech solutions – is your home’s windows. Thieves come in either through the door or windows, so provided you have already invested in solid doors and door locks, windows are your weakest point of entry.

Everlast Window & Door, located in Columbia city, Washington has been a local family-owned and operated glass business since decades. Although the business changed ownership in 1977, the business model of “customer focused, quality workmanship, and competitive prices" has not changed.
I chose Everlast Window & Door based off of the Yelp reviews and I'm happy that I did. I was able to get an appointment within a couple of days after deciding to move forward with the project. I was pleased with the quick turn around time. Another company that I contacted for a quote was going to be a few weeks out so that definitely helped sway things towards Everlast. Also, both quotes were comparable. Dorian arrived a few minutes past our appointment time but he apologized a few times and explained that the previous job had run a little longer than expected. I appreciated the sincerity. Once he got started, it didn't take too long to finish the job. Afterwards, he explained some of the things I could expect to see over the first few weeks following the installation. This included bubbles and haze which are normal as the solution settles. We chit chatted for a bit as he worked and I inquired about some of the other products they offered. He was really knowledgeable and he explained some of the pros and cons to the different products.
