You probably already know why you need replacement windows in Mercer Island, WA. Old, damaged windows can mar your home’s appearance and decrease your comfort. A newly installed window won’t have any of the problems that often plague older ones.

However, replacing the windows is a serious home improvement project. You’ll have to devote your time and money if you want it to be completed. Before you write a check, you should know what you’re signing up for.

If you’re in the market for a window upgrade, here’s what you need to consider.

1. Is a Repair Possible?

You don’t have to replace your old, damaged windows. If the problems are slight, there’s a chance that a repair will suffice. However, you should know that know are often expensive and the final result won’t be as efficient as if you had a new window.

2. What Will it Look Like?

Aesthetics are critical. Don’t you want to live in a place that makes you smile? Upgrading your windows only makes sense if you’re going to be pleased with the final project. A 2016 study by the National Association of Realtors’ found that homeowners get around a 73% return on their investment in replacement windows when they eventually sell the home. However, that percentage plummets if your house doesn’t have a strong curb appeal.

If you’re thinking about a drastic change to your windows, make sure the new look flows wells with the rest of the house.

3. What Materials are You Using?

Wood frames appear elegant but they come with a high maintenance cost. As lumber quality has decreased, wood-based products have become less stable. If you choose solid wood window frames, you’ll eventually have to deal with rot.

You can also choose to install wood windows with an aluminum covering or cladding on the outside. For a more cost-effective option, you can stick with vinyl windows.

4. Will You Get a Full Replacement?

There are multiple ways to upgrade your windows. Either you can choose a full replacement and your contractor will install an entirely new unit or you can opt for partial replacement and the contractor will install a smaller unit within the existing window space. If the window is fully replaced, the contractor will have to replace the interior and exterior trim.

Window inserts can be installed without touching the trim but the fit won’t be as tight.

5. Do You know a Good Contractor?

Home improvement projects often turn into headaches because of miscommunications with the contractor. People show up late and work doesn’t get completed on time or the cost estimate turns out to be wildly off base.

You can save yourself a lot of potential hassle by hiring someone that you can trust. If you don’t know anyone, read reviews.
